Constitution Hill (ConHill)
ConHill is a city precinct, anchored by the South African Constitutional Court – the highest court in the country.
ConHill, previously the site of Apartheid-era prisons, has been reborn as the ultimate site of democracy within the country, and the entire precinct is aimed at reflecting the change away from apartheid towards the current, fully democratic dispensation.
The precinct hosts important heritage buildings, including the Old Fort, Section 4 and 5 [“Native Gaol’] and the Women’s Prison.

The ConHill site offers a rich and unique experience through its heritage and educational enrichment programmes, showcasing the South African transition built on hope for the future out of the pain of the past. The experience, which is visualized through images, objects, photographs and memories, recreated stories and experiences, form the basis of the tours and give a sense of how power and punishment were inflicted on the minds and bodies of prisoners. It also demonstrates the efforts that men and women made to overcome prison conditions. This Heritage, Education and Tourism [HET] programme brings thousands of visitors to the site;
The Constitutional Court of South Africa is situated on Constitution Hill and is Johannesburg’s newest historical landmark and a unique architectural symbol of South Africa’s democracy. Today, the elegant Constitutional Court presides over this once-reviled place and stands as a proud monument to South Africa’s hard-earned freedom. The Court extends an invitation to the general public and international visitors to explore the history of South Africa’s political transition;
The site has huge commercial and other development potential aimed at bringing this major national and international heritage site into viable, sustainable economic use and promoting economic growth through the development of visitor attractions.
