Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC)
The AIDC was established in 2000 to assist in increasing the global competitiveness of the South African automotive industry and to provide accessible and affordable world-class technology to localise the industry. The AIDC seeks the aggregation of automotive assemblers, component manufacturers and material suppliers in a bid to reposition the Gauteng economy in high value-added segments in knowledge-driven manufacturing and services.
It focuses on enhancing the competitiveness of the automotive industry through the involvement of small business enterprises and significantly progressing broad-based economic empowerment. Other key objectives of the AIDC include contributing towards building skills, technology and infrastructure platforms from which enterprises can benefit.
The AIDC’s key functions/services include:
Supply Chain Development
Aimed at moving the automotive industry towards global competitiveness with a focus on macro logistics projects. The need to enhance industry-wide process improvements through logistics collaboration – bringing the industry and government together.
Supplier Development
Enhancing the global competitiveness of the supplier base of AIDC services, through partnerships in all areas that affect the enterprise outside the arena of the shop floor.
Skills Development and Training
Creating training and internships for semi-skilled / skilled workers in the automotive industry [[1,482 in 2008 &1,050 in 200]]. Of these people .70% are employed by industry, the creation of jobs that might not have existed previous to this intervention. It further provides relevant scientific educational opportunities to students of previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
