Constitution Hill is an internationally important symbol of the new South Africa; born of the political process but now independent of it; the home of the Law of the Constitution; and the home of the guarantor of Human Rights for every South African citizen.
Constitution Hill is located between Braamfontein and Hillbrow and comprises 95,000 sq metres of publicly owned land and properties. It hosts important heritage buildings, including the Old Fort, Section 4 and 5 ("Native Gaol") and the Women's Prison, and more recently the new Constitutional Court of South Africa,which was officially opened on Human Rigths day in 2004. Strategic Objectives The broad goal Constitution Hill is to bring this major national and international heritage site into viable, sustainable economic use, to create employment, increase the rates base and promote economic growth in Gauteng through the development of visitor attractions.
