Gautrain

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the-art rapid rail network plan for Gauteng.

The rail connection comprises two links, namely a link between Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg and a link between Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) and Sandton.  Apart from the four anchor stations on these two links, six other stations will be linked by approximately 80 kilometres of rail along the proposed route.

Although Gautrain was initiated as one of the eleven Blue IQ (now GGDA) projects, the Project is now part of the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works. A Gautrain Management Agency has been established.

The Gautrain project is primarily aimed at enhancing and supporting economic growth in the Gauteng Province, creating employment and alleviating traffic congestion. This Project is part of a longer-term vision, which will include a commitment towards creating and sustaining a new culture of public transport usage.

Strategic Objectives

The Gautrain project illustrates the Gauteng Provincial Government's (GPG) commitment to promoting public transport and strives to support the priorities of GPG, including:

  • accelerated economic growth, development and infrastructure delivery, with emphasis on job creation;
  • quality service delivery;
  • good governance;
  • SME development;
  • investment in Black Economic Empowerment;
  • convergence of Public-Private Partnerships; and
  • promotion of tourism.

With the implementation of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link project the GPG also strongly considered the improvement of transport and land use co-ordination and the integration of the different modes of transport.  The image of public transport will also be improved with the Gautrain.
