About the Gauteng Growth & Development Agency
ABOUT THE GAUTENG GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT AGENCY
GGDA came into existence on the 01st June 2012, as part of the reconfiguration of Gauteng provincial agencies. The Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA) and Blue IQ Investment Holdings have merged to form the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency. The key considerations for the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) was that the merger would ensure that they;
- Reduce duplications,
- Improve effiencies
- Maximise the the effect of the agencies charged with the responsibility of developing the economy of Gauteng
The agency is mandated and funded by the GDED to design, develop and implement key strategic economic development programmes, such as the Gauteng Economic Growth and Development Strategy (GEGDS) and positioning itself as a thought leader to manage relations within its scope of operations as the implementation arm of GDED and the provincial government.
“Over the past few years, we have witnessed changes in our economy brought about by the agencies we have created. We can see that we can achieve even greater synergy and delivery by merging the Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA) and Blue IQ to form Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA).” Mr, Nkosiphendule Kolisili, MEC for GDED
GGDA’s MAIN FUNCTION
The business plan sets out six strategic interventions, programmes and projects. It considers high level deliverables by 2014, intended impact, cost and proposed funding mechanisms. These interventions aim to;
- build local and regional economies for sustainable livelihoods
- enhance the economic competitiveness of Special Economic Zones (SEZs)
- accelerate sector support and development
- create an enabling environment
- promote a green economy and
- support targeted projects.
The GGDA’s purpose is therefore to grow the economy by positioning Gauteng as a Globally Competitive City Region (GCR). It aims to demonstrate thought leadership in implementing key programmes and provide support for the development of key sectors of the economy in line with the conventional economic and industrial policies of the Province. Key to this is support growth of the cooperatives economy, facilitation of trade and investment and increased strategic economic infrastructure. The GGDA also aims to certify that key provincial strategies are supported in a manner that ensures success of those strategies. The GEGDS is seen as an immediate strategy that will be supported by the GGDA.
In line with the GEGDS, the Programme of Action 2012 to 2014 is made up of six comprehensive but focused areas of strategic intervention that taken together, will yield high impact in critical success areas in the short-term, whilst simultaneously ensuring traction on long-term projects that are set to significantly transform the Gauteng economy. Many of the projects overlap in terms of meeting more than one objective. The grouping of strategic interventions and projects are simply done to provide a clear and coherent programme focused on delivery and implementation.
The impact measures used to prioritise projects into this programme of action are;
- Job creation
- Education
- Skills improvement and development
- SMME development
- Infrastructure development
- Resource efficiency
- Environmental sustainability
- Global competitiveness/reducing the cost of doing of business and
- Trade and investment facilitation
MANDATE
To be the implementation arm of the GDED and to assist the department to lead, facilitate and manage sustainable job creation and inclusive economic growth and development in the Gauteng City Region.
VISION
To be the premier catalyst of innovative and sustainable growth and socio-economic development within the Southern African Region.
MISSION
The GGDA creates an enabling environment for growth through targeted investment facilitation, strategic infrastructure development and social transformation, thus positioning Gauteng as a leading Global City Region.

State of the Province Address by the Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane , in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature
Madam Speaker,Deputy Speaker,
Members of the Executive Council,
Honourable Leaders of Political Parties,
Honourable Mayors,
Honourable Members of the Provincial Legislature,
Councillors,
Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Distinguished guests,
The people of Gauteng,
It is a great pleasure and honour to address the opening of the Gauteng Legislature in Tshwane, the seat of government of the Republic of South Africa. We are here today not to protest or demonstrate against the inhumane system of apartheid which Pretoria came to symbolise. We are here to recognise the triumph of democracy over racial tyranny, national unity over separate development as well as the entrenchment of non-racialism and non-sexism as pillars of our democracy.Tshwane, as a liberated city, is now second only to Washington DC in hosting the largest number of foreign embassies in the world.
Close to where we are sitting lie the gallows which are a grim reminder of where we come from as the nation. It is the place where lives were lost for freedom, equality and justice for all. It is in this city where many of our heroes and heroines were given paupers funerals in the false belief that their memory would be totally obliterated from the nation's consciousness. It is in Mamelodi cemetery where the sacred remains of those who died at the hands of the apartheid hangman lie, together with those of the ANC President, the late Comrade Sefako Makgatho.
